Ekstrem funkcije y=f(x.y) uz ogranicenje g(x,y)=0 naziva se USLOVNI (vezani) ekstrem. Tako dobijeni minimum (maksimum) su uslovni minimum (maksimum).

Zadatak se svodi na rjesavanje ekstrema funkcije sa jednim argumentom. Mogu se javiti teskoce pri izracunavanju promjenljive x iz jednacine g(x.y)=0 pa se koristi metod Lagranzove funkcije:
F=f(x,y)+λg(x.y)
